SAN JOSE, Calif. - Leata Sherlin went 6-for-8 with four RBIs to lead the San José State softball team (8-15, 0-0 MW) in both, 5-1 and 6-2 wins over Saint Mary's (14-10, 0-0 WCC) on the final day of the Silicon Valley Classic II on Sunday to close out non-conference play. 

GAME 1: SAN JOSÉ STATE 5, SAINT MARY'S 1

In the first game, the Gaels scored first off a single in the top of the first, making it 1-0. The Spartans would immediately respond in the bottom half of the frame with two runs off the bat of Shay McDowell, scoring Carly Cummings and Ahmiya Noriega

The Spartans put up two more runs in the bottom of the second with a single up the middle from Cummings to score Sarah Deplitch. Sherlin produced her first RBI of the day with a single to center to score Samantha Kulak from second. 

In the Spartan sixth inning, Gigi Ortega would lay down a sacrifice bunt to score Sherlin from third to secure the game 5-1. 

Delaney Faus was alone in the circle for the Spartans, only allowing the Gaels one run, one walk with two strikeouts. This marks her second win in a row while also pitching the entire seven innings.

NOTABLES

  • McDowell went perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3
  • Sherlin went 3-for-4
  • Cummings and Noriega both went 2-for-4

GAME 2: SAN JOSÉ STATE 6, SAINT MARY'S 2

The Spartans were in the driver's seat first in the second game, scoring in the bottom of the first off a single to left from Sherlin that scored Reina Zermeno from second. 

Following that, in the very next inning, the Spartans would bring in a duo of runs. First scoring in Taylor Chillingworth from a Haley Reeve single to left. Zermeno next joined the RBI party with a single to right that brought in Reeve from second. 

The Gaels responded with one run in both the third and fourth innings to make the score 3-2. 

The Spartans then found more security runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Sherlin ropes a triple into the right-field corner that scored Zermeno from second and Cummings from first. McDowell then followed it up with a single into center to score Sherlin to secure the win for the Spartans. 

Norah Coulsell earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings and only allowing the two runs. Faus then shared the load to pitch the remaining 1.2 innings to close the door on the Gaels. 

NOTABLES

  • Deplitch stole her first bag of the season 
  • Reeve's single and RBI were the first of the season for her
  • Faus earned the first save of her career
  • Zermeno went 2-for-4 with one RBI
