RENO, Nev. – Peyton Rowles went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored to lead the San José State baseball team (14-21, 5-7 MW) in a 5-4 series deciding loss to Nevada (19-13, 8-4 MW) Sunday afternoon from Don Weir Field at Peccole Park in the final game of a three game series.
The Spartans wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard. In the top of the first inning, JC Osorio-Agard reached on a single that, combined with a Nevada fielding error, allowed the game’s first run to score. Moments later, Brent Cota delivered an RBI single to center, giving San José State an early 2-0 lead.
The score would not change until Nevada responded in the bottom half of the sixth with a solo home run, trimming the lead to 2-1. The Wolfpack added another run in the eighth, making it a 2-2 ballgame headed into ninth.
In the top of the ninth with two runners on, Rowles came through with a clutch single to center, driving in two runs to put San José State back on top, 4-2. However, in the bottom of the ninth, Nevada delivered a walk-off three-run home run, giving the Wolfpack the victory 5-4.
On the mound, Dylan Smith got the Start, allowing just one run across six innings pitched and striking out four. EJ McGrew and Caden Duke each allowed one run in an inning of relief. Peter Herrick (1-2) received the loss.
