LOGAN, Utah - Shay McDowell tallied two RBIs while going 2-for-3 at the plate to the San José State softball team (12-27, 4-12 MW) in the 6-5 extra-inning loss to Utah State (17-26, 5-11 MW) at LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans jumped on the Aggies early in the first inning. Sophia Burdick led off the game with a single down in a 1-2 count. Stealing second and following an Ahmiya Noriega single, advanced to third.
With a Leata Sherlin single through the left side, she brought in Burdick from third and advanced Noriega to third, who advanced to second earlier on a passed ball.
Sherlin and Noriega committed a double steal that led to both runners being safe, Noriega scoring.
McDowell, later in a hitters count, 3-1, slashed a single up the middle that brought in Sherlin and Haley Reeve, who walked and stole second. The Spartans took the early lead of 4-0.
The Aggies then responded by scoring two runs in the second and three runs in the third inning, taking the lead 5-4.
The Spartans then knotted the game with Reeve at the plate, who was in a 2-2 count, had an infield single to score Noriega from third.
The game then headed into extra innings with the tie of 5-5.
With the bases loaded, the Aggies walked it off on a double.
- Jordyn Fray pitched into the eighth after taking over in the third inning. This is her longest outing of the season, 5.1 innings. She held the Aggies for five scoreless innings.
- Sherlin and Reeve each collected both a hit and an RBI
- Burdick went 2-for-4 at the plate, her second game in a row with two hits
- Gigi Ortega and Noriega each also collected one hit
