Spartans Cruise to Victory at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. –  Alex Fernandes reached base five times, scoring four runs, and adding a home run and double to lead the San José State baseball team (17-21, 5-7 MW) in a 10-2 non-conference victory over Fresno State (11-24-1, 1-10-1 MW) Saturday afternoon from Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium in the second game of a two game series.

The Spartans wasted no time setting the tone. After loading the bases in the top of the first, Rocco Caballero came through with a two-run single to give SJSU an early 2–0 lead. That cushion held through four innings thanks to starter Jesse Gutierrez, who allowed just one hit and held Fresno State off the board in that span.

San José State broke the game open in the fifth. Fernandes ignited the inning with a double, and Jake McCoy followed by launching a two-run homer to left, extending the lead to 4–0. Fresno State answered with two runs in the bottom half, but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get.

A three-run seventh inning, highlighted by RBI hits from McCoy, Rohne Klein, and Neil Jansen, pushed the lead to 7–2. Fernandes added a solo home run in the eighth, and SJSU tacked on two more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Gutierrez went four innings, allowing two runs, while Kyler Bacosa, Caden Duke, Tyler Albanese, and EJ McGrew combined to shut Fresno State down over the final five frames. Duke (4-0) earned the win in relief as SJSU held the Bulldogs to just six hits and 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

  • This was Fernandes’ 16th multi-hit game and 10th multi-RBI game of the season, both of which lead the team

  • This was McCoy’s third game this season with three RBIs
  • McCoy hit his 10th home run of the season
