DALLAS — The Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Thursday that the San José State football media relations staff has been selected as a recipient of the 17th Annual Super 11 Awards, recognizing the best-performing College Sports Communicators departments in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
This marks the second time (2009) in school history that the San José State athletics communications staff has received this prestigious honor. The Super 11 Awards are designed to identify departments that go above and beyond in their service to the media, providing exemplary access to coaches and student-athletes and maintaining a professional, helpful environment for those covering the sport.
The SJSU football media relations staff consists of Associate AD for Communications and Broadcasting and football Sports Information Director (SID) Sky Kerstein, Director of Athletics Media Relations Amy Villa, and Multimedia Specialist Matt Levin.
"Congratulations to Sky and his team for this prestigious honor and recognition," said Scott MacDonald, San José State Senior Deputy AD for External Operations. "Serving the media is a high priority at San José State, and Sky understands the importance of that first-class experience, having worked as a media person for over a decade before making the transition to collegiate athletics. We appreciate the FWAA and all the media that cover SJSU for this distinction and look forward to telling all the great stories of SJSU Athletics."
SJSU joins Clemson, Iowa, Kansas, Navy, Nebraska, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas Tech, and West Virginia on the list for work during the 2025 season. Notably, SJSU is the only Mountain West program and one of just two non-Power Four schools to receive the distinction.
The criteria for the Super 11 include a department’s effectiveness in facilitating interviews, the quality of press box operations on game days, the accessibility of the head coach and players, and the overall efficiency of providing timely information and resources to local and national media members.
The FWAA introduced the Super 11 in 2009 to encourage and reward "media-friendly" standards within the FBS. SJSU was named an FWAA "special merit" recipient in 2020 for its work during the pandemic.
