SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Jake McCoy secured his 43rd RBI of the season to lead the San José State baseball team (21-27, 8-13 MW) in a 4-1 series deciding loss to San Diego State (32-20, 15-6 MW) Sunday afternoon from Tony Gwynn Stadium in the final game of a three game series.
The Spartans wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning when Alex Fernandes was hit by pitch and Peyton Rowles reached on a fielder's choice. McCoy then delivered an RBI single to score Rowles for the 1-0 lead.
However, the Aztecs responded immediately in the bottom of the frame, using a bases-loaded single and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead. SJSU threatened again in the second and third innings as Brent Cota doubled and Fernandes ripped a triple, but both were left stranded.
San Diego State added to their lead in the third with an RBI single and tacked on another run from an RBI double in the seventh to go up 4-1. The Spartans were unable to erase the deficit, giving the win to the Aztecs.
From the mound, Spartan starter Dylan Smith (3-4) took the loss, allowing three runs over 4.0 innings. The bullpen provided solid relief, including 2.0 scoreless frames from EJ McGrew. Kyle Calzadiaz pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four.

- With 11 career triples at SJSU, Fernandes moves to sixth on the SJSU most triples all-time list
