Fernandes Provides Spark as Spartans Drop Contest to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. –  Alex Fernandes went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double and a walk to lead the San José State baseball team (20-26, 7-12 MW) in a 11-1 seven inning loss to San Diego State (31-19, 14-5 MW) Friday night from Tony Gwynn Stadium in the first game of a three game series.

San Diego State plated four runs in the first inning and added five more in the fourth to seize full control.

SJSU’s lone run came in the third inning. After Fernandes delivered a double, Peyton Rowles brought him home with a two out RBI double to briefly cut into the deficit. As a team, the Spartans managed three hits and went 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

On the mound, starter David Thomas (4-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs (eight earned) over 3.1 innings. Luca Staiano provided relief, tossing the final 2.2 innings while surrendering two runs.
