SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Ronin Axelson made four saves to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MW) in a 3-0 loss to Cal Poly (1-0-2, 0-0-0 PAC-12) Thursday night from Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
Cal Poly opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Cal Poly finished a shot in the top right corner off a pass through the middle of the box. The Mustangs doubled their advantage at 39:59 after a defensive miscommunication set up a Cal Poly breakaway, sending San José State into halftime trailing 2-0.
An own goal extended Cal Poly’s lead in the 54th minute. The Spartans earned an immediate opportunity to respond from the penalty spot, but the Mustang goalie saved Angel Fernandez’s attempt in the 56th minute.
San José State continued to press, recording seven of its nine shots after halftime. Ryan Corcoran and Tiko Moodie each placed an effort on target, while Neo Ruiz had a shot blocked and Angel Gutierrez and Jordi Tortell Daly narrowly missed the frame late in the match.
