SAN JOSE, Calif. – Amir Anwary registered a brace and two assists to lead San José State men’s soccer team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 MW) a 4-2 victory over Saint Mary’s (1-3-0, 0-0-0 WCC) on Sunday at the Spartan Soccer Complex in the team’s home opener.
The Spartans struck just 4:46 into the match when Anwary set up Jordi Tortell Daly with a pass in the middle of the box for the opening goal. Saint Mary’s answered less than two minutes later with a goal from outside the top of the box, but San José State quickly regained control.
Anwary scored twice in a span of two minutes. He first put the Spartans ahead in the 26th minute, burying a header off a cross from Cameron Cook right in front of the goal. Daniel Fregoso Bautista also recorded an assist on the goal. Anwary then extended the lead to 3-1 in the 28th minute after he put a host into the bottom right corner off a Tortell Daly pass in the middle.
The Gaels pulled within one on a goal in the 34th-minute, sending San José State into halftime with a 3-2 advantage.
After Saint Mary’s applied pressure throughout much of the second half, the Spartans restored their two-goal cushion in the 78th minute. Anwary delivered his second assist of the afternoon to Fregoso Bautista, who finished for his first goal of the season and sealed the 4-2 victory.
Goalkeeper Ronin Axelson made five saves to earn the win, while the San José State defense also produced a team save.
