Spartans Drop Match at UNLV

LAS VEGAS – Amir Anwary found the back of the net to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (3-5-2, 0-1-1 MW) in a 2-1 loss to UNLV (5-3-2, 1-1-0 MW) on Wednesday night from Peter Johann Memorial Field.

In the 17th minute of the game, the game was paused for an extended period due to glass on the field from a broken window.

 UNLV opened the scoring in the 25th minute, converting a one-on-one breakaway. Just two minutes later, the Spartans tied the game when Anwary scored his third goal of the season off an assist from Jordi Tortell Daly and sent the teams into halftime tied at 1-1. 

UNLV regained the lead in the 59th minute when the Rebels converted a penalty kick. San José State continued to pressure the Rebels throughout the second half, recording eight shots after halftime, but was unable to find the equalizer.

Neo Ruiz had an opportunity to tie the match from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute, but his attempt was stopped by the crossbar. Daniel Fregoso Bautista led the Spartans with four shots, while goalkeeper Ronin Axelson made four saves.
