PHOENIX - Amir Anwary scored his fourth goal of the season to lead the San José State men’s soccer team (3-6-2, 0-2-1 MW) in a 2-1 loss to Grand Canyon (6-5-0, 3-0-0 MW) on Sunday night from GCU Stadium.
The Lopes took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute and then doubled its advantage just 13 seconds into the second half.
San José State responded in the 62nd minute when Anwary found the back of the net off a shot from outside of the box, with Jordi Tortell Daly providing the assist. The Spartans continued to pressure the Lopes, outshooting Grand Canyon 9-5 in the second half, but could not find the equalizer.
San José State finished with a 14-13 advantage in total shots and held 54% possession. Goalkeeper Ronin Axelson made six saves in the loss.
