Joe Staab joined the San José State University football coaching staff in January 2013 as the safeties coach. In 2014, he will be coaching the outside linebackers.
Staab came to the Spartans after four seasons with Ron Caragher at the University of San Diego. He coached the safeties and was the recruiting coordinator his last three seasons (2010-12). In his first season, he assisted coaching the defensive backs and special teams. At USD, his players received five Pioneer Football League all-conference and two all-academic awards.
Besides his on-the-field responsibilities, Staab also serves as the program's academic liaison. Last season, 16 San Jose State players were named Academic All-Mountain West tying a school record for most football players honored in one season. Two Spartans were named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society and another was named a Mountain?West Conference Scholar-Athlete. An unprecedented nine members of the 2014 San José State team are enrolled in graduate school.
The 2008 University of San Diego graduate majored in business administration and played his college career for the Toreros with Caragher (2006-08) and Harbaugh (2004-05) as his head coaches. He was named the Toreros[apos] Special Teams Player of the Year as a senior in 2008.
A second-generation college football player, his dad, Joe Staab, was a letterwinning defensive lineman on the 1978 C.W. Post Long Island University team that was in the midst of 16 consecutive seasons of .500 or better win-loss records.
