Billal Samy joins the Spartans Men’s Soccer program with great excitement and optimism. He joins the Spartans after serving as an Assistant Coach at Cal Men’s Soccer, under Pac-12 veteran Kevin Grimes.
Samy’s work at the youth level has earned him a reputation for developing technically & tactically sound players and teams. As the boy’s director and head coach (2000, 2001 and 2002 age groups) at Lamorinda Soccer Club, Samy was pivotal in creating an environment for both player development and success. In May of 2017 Samy was the only person in his position to lead two separate teams (U15B & U16B) to State Titles, in the highest division. It was the first for the boys in their clubs history.
Samy’s coaching education endeavors include multiple NSCAA diplomas as well as extensive study trips to some of the top La Liga & Premier League Clubs.
Prior to dedicating his time fully to coaching, Samy served as an Account Executive at both Major League Soccer (Blaine, Minnesota) and the San Jose Earthquakes. During his time at the Earthquakes (2010-2011), Samy worked passionately to contribute to the growing Soccer Culture in the Bay Area.
Samy had a brief Division-1 playing experience at USF in 2005, under coach Erik Visser. Brother Yousef Samy played at San Jose State from 2005-2007 and St. Mary’s from 2007-2009. Father Rahmat Samy was a member of the Afghan National Soccer Team 1970-1974.
