Sean Gwi was named an assistant coach for San José State's track & field program in September of 2019.
In Gwi's second year at SJSU, he coached both Roman Johnson and the men's 4x100 relay team to titles at the 2021 Mountain West Outdoor Championships. Two of Gwi's sprinters, plus the women's 4x100 team, qualified for the 2021 NCAA West Regionals.
Gwi took over in his new role after spending the previous two seasons as the associate coach for the Hawaii women's track & field program. He oversaw sprints, hurdles and jumps for the Warriors, helping his athletes earn some of the Big West's top marks on a consistent basis.
He earned a Bachelor's degree in kinesiology at San Francisco State and a Master's in coaching and athletic administration at Concordia-Irvine. Prior to working at Hawaii, Gwi was the head women's track & field coach at Laney College in addition to serving coaching roles at City College of San Francisco and Chabot College.
The Eagles soared to new heights with Gwi at the helm at Laney, winning a pair of individual titles in 2014 while placing fifth at the California State Championships. While serving as an assistant on the staff, the Eagles placed first at the state title meet in 2012 and second a year later.
Originally from San Francisco, Gwi has participated in the USA Track & Field (USATF) Emerging Elite Coaching Camp and has Level II USATF certifications in both sprints and jumps.
