Jose Macias is in his eighth year as an Athletic Academic Advisor, in 2019, and his ninth year working in the Athletics Department at San José State.
In his role, Macias works to ensure student-athletes meet NCAA regulations regarding academic eligibility, assists in career development, performs one-on-one counseling with student-athletes, and advises on general university policies and procedures.
Prior to his position in the athletics department, Macias was an Academic Advising Intern for San José State's College of Science, advising students on curriculum and degree requirements and assisting with drop-in office hours and resolving academic difficulties.
Currently, he is a lecturer in the College of Science, teaching Science 90 a first-year college experience course.
Macias began his athletics advising-career at San José State as a Student- Athlete Peer Advisor. He monitored at-risk student-athletes and provided study skills and techniques, as well as meeting with the student-athletes weekly and preparing weekly reports on academic progress.
Macias has worked at various San Jose community organizations, including Beacon School and Andrew Hill High School as a Behavioral Coach, the YWCA as a My Strength Facilitator, EMQ Families First as a Family Specialist, Housing Authority of Santa Clara County as a Site Coordinator, and as a student advisor in San José State's pre-college program.
Macias earned a B.A. in psychology with a minor in justice studies from San José State in 2005, and his M.A. in counselor education in 2011, also from San José State.
