Joe Puentes, Psy.D. is a Clinical and Sport Psychologist who specializes in providing therapy and consultation to athletes, coaches, sports medicine staff and professionals. Dr. Joe started at San Jose State University (SJSU) in the Fall of 2021, initially with Football and now supporting mental health for all SJSU student athletes. Dr. Joe is the owner of the Performance Psychology Center, offering in person and tele-mental health Sport Psychology services to athletes and athletic departments. Dr. Joe has 10+ years of experience bridging the gap between athletes and mental health. As a former competitive athlete, his passion is in promoting well being and peak performance so that athletes and professionals can thrive when it matters most.
Dr. Joe received specialized graduate training at the University of Southern California (practicum) and then at the University of Notre Dame (pre-doctoral internship and post doctoral fellowship). Dr. Joe works closely with SJSU Athletics and Sonoma State University Athletics, providing therapy to student athletes, consultation to the sports medicine staff and performance/mental skills training to NCAA teams. Dr. Joe has had the privilege of working with State Champions, National Champions, All Americans, professional and amateur athletes. He is listed on the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Mental Health Registry and is a member of the Collegiate Clinical Sport Psychology Association.
Additionally, Dr. Joe is at supervisor at Santa Rosa Junior College, supporting the Sport Psych track practicum trainees there. He consults with local media outlets and guest lectures at high schools and universities regarding Clinical and Sport Psychology. Outside of his work, Dr. Joe appreciates being in nature, spending time with friends and family and watching and playing sports. He loves to hike and plays baseball recreationally in Sonoma County. Dr. Joe is originally from Illinois and is a life long Chicago Cubs Fan.
