Kolney Cassel was named Offensive Analyst at San José State on January 6th, 2024. Cassel came from Idaho State where he was the Quarterbacks Coach in 2024. Before Idaho State, Cassel was the Inside Wide Receivers Coach at Utah Tech (2023), the Offensive Coordinator at West Valley High School (2022), the Offensive Quality Control Coach at Washington State (2020-21) and the offensive graduate assistant at Hawai‘i (2019-20).
Cassel began his collegiate career at Southern Methodist University playing for June Jones. While at SMU he was also mentored by Offensive Coordinator, Hal Mumme. After a redshirt season, he started a game against Texas A&M, but injuries limited him to five games in 2014, and after a head coaching change he moved on to Sacramento State for three seasons where he ventured into West Coast offensive principles. With a year of eligibility left, he transferred to Hawai‘i in 2018 where he played for Nick Rolovich. Upon finishing his playing career, he immediately joined the coaching ranks beginning as an Offensive Graduate Assistant for Coach Rolovich.
At Hawai‘i, Cassel was part of an offensive staff that produced the No. 3 passing attack in the nation, the No. 1 ranked total offense and the No. 1 ranked passing attack in the Mountain West Conference. He worked closely with quarterback Cole McDonald, who was a seventh-round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans.
When Rolovich left Hawai‘i for Washington State, Cassel accompanied him to the mainland ascending to the offensive quality control coach. The Cougars would end up No. 3 in passing yards per game and No. 3in total passing yards. Cassel then spent the 2022 season in the high school ranks as Offensive Coordinator at West Valley High School and led the State of Washington in total passing. Coaching his younger brother at quarterback, Cassel orchestrated an offense with Air Raid offense mixed with Run N Shoot passing concepts to develop three receivers in the top 25 in the state while leading the state with 372.8 passing yards per game, and a quarterback rating of 116.
Coach Cassel also went to Utah Tech where he coached the inside wide receivers achieving the 15th-ranked passing offense in FCS football. Cassel mentored Jerry Rice Award Finalist, Beau Sparks, before arriving to Idaho State in February of 2024.
A native of Yakima, Washington Cassel earned his Communication degree from Sacramento State in 2017 and completed his Master’s from Grand Canyon
in 2020. He is married to his wife, Adysen.
