Ernst Leads The Way At USF Invitational; Spartans Sixth

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jannik Ernst and Matthew Stephens both had top-25 finishes for the San José State men's cross country team which came in fifth place out of six teams at the USF Invitational on August 31.

In his first race as a Spartan, Ernst finished in 15th place to lead the team. He finished the 8K course through Golden Gate Park in 26:02.1. Stephens finished eight spots behind Ernst in 23rd place with a time of 26:47.5.

"Jannik and Matthew ran a good race for us," said San José State head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. "I thought the team did well today, but we have a lot to build on and a lot of work to do."

SJSU finished with a 140 team score. Stanford took first place with a score of 30 with California as a close second with 35.

Nicholas Sherrell with a time of 28:38.3 was the third Spartan to cross the finish line in 39th place. Garrick Chan (28:46.3, 40th) and Alexander Selevos (29:19.9, 43rd) rounded out the five scorers for San José State.

USF's Eric Causey took first place individually with a time of 25:11.5, beating out California's Chris Walden who finished nearly three seconds later.

Also competing for SJSU: Samuel Ryan (29:34.6, 45th), and Imran Zaman (29:58.0, 46th).

The Spartans' next race is the Fresno Invitational coming up on September 14.
