Berkeley, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis team won two singles matches and two doubles matches in the first day of the NIKE Invitational.
Freshman Tipper Truong defeated Rocio Diaz of Marquette in straight sets 6-1; 6-4, advancing to the round of 16 in the White Singles draw, where she fell 6-2;6-2 to Pacific's Gergana Boncheva.
Junior Julianna Bacelar was the second Spartan to advance to a singles round of 16 match after she defeated Marquette's Erin Gebes, 6-1; 6-0.
Other Spartan winners included Sabastiani Leon Chao, Marie Klocker, Gaelle Rey, and Justine Deleval, who each won their first round consolation matches.
In doubles, Bacelar teamed up with Deleval, defeating the Gergana Boncheva of Pacific and Truong in the round of 16.
The duo of Jessica Willett and Leon Chao topped Juliette Legendre and Sheila Morales Hidalgo of Nevada, 8-3, in the last doubles match of the day, moving onto the quarterfinals round.
SPARTANS FARE WELL ON DAY TWO
On the second day of play, Leon Chao, Klocker and Rey made it to the semifinal rounds in the Blue Singles consolation bracket.
In the quarterfinal round, Leon Chao defeated Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke 6-4; 6-4 and Klocker defeated Megan Heneghan of UC Davis 6-7(5); 6-3; 1-0(3). The two go head to head in the semifinal round on September 29 starting at 10:30 a.m.
Rey, a freshman from Geneva, Switzerland, went three sets, winning 3-6, 6-3,1-0(4) in an upset against #56 nationally ranked Gabriella DeSimone of USC. She goes up against Armstrong Atlantic State's Clara Perez in the semifinal round.
Truong and Bacelar each won their match in the RR Singles Round Robin 1 draw.
"Today was a great day for singles," said head coach Sylvain Malroux about the team's performance. "We saw a lot of very good performances and our freshmen are doing really well."
The Spartans conclude match play on Sunday, September 29. Doubles play begin at 9:00 a.m.
