Men's Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale at Seattle

Seattle, Wash. - In its final match of the 2013 regular season, the San Jose State men's soccer team fell to the Redhawks of Seattle University 1-0 on Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference game on Seattle's Championship Field.

The Redhawks goal came in the 24th minute. At the 23:09 mark, Jeff Rose fired a shot to the left corner from 15 yards out for his third tally of the season. Miguel Gonzalez was credited with an assist on the play. The goal would stand up for the next 66 minutes and improve the Seattle record to 8-8-4 overall, 7-0-3 in WAC games. The Spartans fall to 3-12-3, 3-6-1 in conference play.

For the match, San José State out shot the Redbirds 17-to-14. Enrique Montano led the attack with a season-high six attempts. Frankie Beauchamp took four shots, with on frame and Rory Knibbs had three shots all on goal. Israel Ayala put one of his two shots on goal and Andy Moya and Dylan West took a shot each.

For Seattle, Jonathan Massimino had four attempts, putting three on frame. Rose was one of three Redhawks with two shots. He but both attempts on goal and got one past keeper Emmanuel Espinosa.

Espinosa stopped seven of the eight shots that reached his line. Jake Feener turned away all five shots that the Spartans put on goal.

San José State started quickly taking the first two shots of the match, but from the fourth minute until the goal in the 24th, Seattle controlled the game and was building momentum with six unanswered attempts. They got the goal and took the 1-0 lead into the half.

In the second half the Spartans took the play to Seattle U. They outshot them 13-to-6 and put five attempts on goal, but couldn't beat Feener, falling 1-0.

With the regular season complete, the WAC Championship Tournament begins on Thursday, November 14 in Colorado Springs, Colo. at the Air Force Academy.

The Spartans end the season tied with Kansas City at 3-6-1, but earn the higher seed by virtue of its 3-1 win over the 'Roos on November 1. San José State is the sixth seed and will play third seed UNLV in a match scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the 14th.
