Spartans Stay #8 Nationally; Hosts #5-Arizona State In Key Matchup

April 2, 2014

Bridgeport, Pa.----- For the first time in three weeks, San Jose State University remained in the same top-10 position in the Collegiate Water Polo Association's national weekly coaches' poll.

The #8-Spartans (18-10, 0-3 MPSF) close out their home schedule, Sunday, April 6, hosting #5-Arizona State (13-6, 1-2 MPSF) in a key conference contest that could have a bearing on post-season competition for both teams. The MPSF match at the Aquatics Center on the San Jose State campus starts at noon with Senior Day ceremonies for goalkeepers Maddie Reardon and Katie Lind and field players Alisa Argend, Rachel Henry, Najelah Najdawi and Ashlea Coski.

San Jose State and Arizona State are meeting for the second time this season. The Sun Devils pulled away for a 15-10 victory over the Spartans in the UC Irvine Invitational six weeks ago. Arizona State led the entire way and held at least a two-goal advantage the entire match.

Since then, the Spartans are 7-4 and have wins over then #6-Hawaii and previously unbeaten and #8-Princeton. Arizona State is 6-3 with a win over this week's #6-UC Irvine. The Sun Devils have a four-match winning streak after sweeping its Sun Devil Invitational the weekend of March 15-16. Arizona State will play co-#1-Stanford on Saturday, April 5, before taking on the Spartans.

Both teams feature two of the top-10 scorers in the MPSF. San Jose State freshman Clara Espar Llaquet and sophomore Rae Leknessare, two and four, respectively. Arizona State's freshman pair of Alkistis Benekou and Izabella Chiappini are fifth and tied for ninth, respectively, in the MPSF in goals scored per match.

Offensively, the Spartans expect to face Arizona State freshman E.B. Keeve in goal. Keeve leads the MPSF in saves per match at 12.44 and has a 7.06 goals against average. San Jose State freshman Katelynn Thompson, who played the last seven quarters as the Spartans' goalkeeper, has a 5.68 goals against average.
