Sixth Annual SAMMY's Presented by the U.S. Marine Corps

April 2, 2015 The SAMMYS, hosted by the San Jose State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and presented by the U.S. Marine Corps, recognize San Jose State's top achievements in competition, the classroom and in the community during the school year. The sixth annual year-end awards will be held on Monday, May 11 at the SJSU Student Union beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Head coach Sage Hopkins and the women's swimming and diving team hope to defend their 2014 Spartan Cup Championship trophy. The trophy is awarded to the team that collects the most points throughout the year in five Champs Life Skills areas: Athletic Excellence, Academic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development and Community Involvement.

Among the awards presented are;
· Community Service Award (2014 winners were the swimming & diving team)
· Newcomer of the Year, for the women and men, (2014 recipients were Clara Espar Llaquet of water polo and Tyler Winston of football)
· Performance of the Year (2014 honorees were Julia Greer of gymnastics and David Fales of football)
· Team Performance Of the Year (2014 were women's water polo win vs. #5 Arizona State and football defeating Fresno State)
· The Spartan Spirit Award (2014 recipients were the women's water polo team)
· The Dick Tomey Class Act Award is presented to a student-athlete who has demonstrated a high level of accomplishment in three key areas: Academics, Leadership, and Community Service. (2014 recipients were Jessica Willett of women's tennis and Andre Mercurio of baseball)
· The John Ralston Award, This is awarded annually to recognize a staff member who displays high moral character and personal integrity that exemplify the spirit of devoted service to their profession and who have by their leadership has made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution to the advancement of San José State Athletics (Fred Guidici., assistant football coach)
· The USMC Leadership Award (2014 recipients were women's tennis' Jessica Willett and football's David Catalano)
· The SAAC will also announce its Academic Awards for the year.

The SAMMY's is a must for every Spartan fan. Enjoy a dinner with the Spartans and celebrate the achievements of our student-athletes. Tickets are available for $35 per person (includes a buffet dinner) and for an additional $15, you can sponsor a student-athlete.
