Honolulu, Hawaii----- For the second consecutive year, San Jose State University linebacker Christian Tago begins a season on the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Watch List.
Tago, a junior from Palmdale, Calif., is one of 36 players of Polynesian descent named to the Watch List compiled by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. Playing in 10 games last season, he was credited with 96 tackles and 5.0 tackles for loss.
Five finalists will be named on November 19. The winner will be announced on December 8 and presented with the 2015 award on January 29, 2016.
There are nearly 300 players of Polynesian ancestry in Division I college football today. This award showcases their incredible talents and gives us a platform to celebrate their success as student-athletes," says chairman and co-founder Jesse Sapolu. Former San Jose State football head coach Dick Tomey serves as the organization's selection committee chairman.
The Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List is the second with Tago's name on it. Earlier, he was named to the Rotary Lombardi Award preseason watch list. Three more Spartans, quarterback Joe Gray (Manning Award), tight end Billy Freeman (John Mackey Award), running back Tyler Ervin (Paul Hornung Award), were named to a watch list.
San Jose State begins preseason practice on August 4. The Spartans' season starts on Thursday, September 3, with the home opener against New Hampshire. Season tickets for the 2015 season are available at www.sjsuspartans.com.
