Head Coach Ron Caragher summarized the first day of official preseason fall practice:
"It was great to get out. Guys were antsy and excited. Many mistakes were made and we're going to go in and watch (practice) as a staff, view the film and coach up our guys.
"There was the typical excitement of the first day. It's about the team coming together and guys competing. Today is the first step of many steps we need to take and it was a step in the right direction.
"We separated the practices into two. We had the veterans first and the first-year guys came after that. We kept it separate so we could have that good hands-on practice time with the first-year guys. Eventually, we will come together as a team (in) practice #4 (Friday, August 7). I think it will work out good this way.
"The first-year guys don't slow up the veterans and we can slow it down for the first year guys as we teach and install our first time as coaches coaching them up. It's beneficial. We've done it at a lot of places I've been ever since the NCAA disallowed the freshmen to come in a week early... They (the first-year players) all looked pretty good... They're learning the system and they have a long way to go.
"There are three guys (Joe Gray, Kenny Potter and Malik Watson) and they are competing (for the quarterback job). I don't have an opinion at this early stage... It's one day at a time. Today (the reps) were balanced and it was pretty good."
