Preparing for the challenge, the San José State Spartans women's diving team takes on five schools at the three day Trojan Diving Invitational at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Friday through Sunday, November 13-15.
"It's a great opportunity for our divers to compete against many of the top divers in the country. It's a preview of some of the competition at the Mountain West Conference championships and the NCAA Zone Championships," said San José State head coach Sage Hopkins.
Sophomores Cari Reiswig and Kylie Fonseca will represent the Spartans at the diving invitational. San José State will be competing against USC, UCLA, Azusa Pacific, Michigan and Cal Baptist over the weekend in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives.
"We're looking for personal best from both divers," said Spartans' diving coach Mark Butcher. "They have both improved a significant amount. Last season we didn't get many opportunities to dive."
Qualifying for the NCAA Zone Championships in her first diving event of the season, Reiswig posted a score of 289.95 to finish first in the 3-meter dive against the California Bears. Reiswig was scored 259.95 in the 1-meter dive to finish second.
"We're focused on each dive as it comes. We have been working on takeoffs and positioning, which matter more at the end of the season," Butcher said.
Against the Bears, Fonseca placed third in the 3-meter with a score of 240.23 and fifth in the 1-meter. Posting season high scores at the Bruin Diving Invitational last season, Fonseca posted a score of 171.15 in the platform dive with Reiswig following right behind with a 171.00 score.
The invitational is the first opportunity for the Spartans to compete in the platform dive this season. In preparation for the platform, San José State has been practicing twice a month at Avery Aquatic Center at Stanford University.
