Senior forward Riana Byrd and sophomore first baseman Shane Timmons are the Spartan Foundation February Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare.Timmons posted hits in six of eight games on the way to a .414 (12-for-29) batting average during the month of February. Two doubles and a home run helped him tally six RBI and seven runs scored. The homer came during a 2-for-4 performance in the season opener versus UC Irvine. He wasn't just a stud at the plate during the month, he cleanly handled all 71 defensive chances at first base.Byrd's 17-point performance in the Spartans' 66-64 win at Fresno State made her the 14th player in SJSU women's basketball history to have cracked the 1,000-career points plateau. She became just the second player, man or woman, to grab over 1,000 rebounds in a career in the 59-58 win over New Mexico. Byrd also hit the game-winner at the buzzer in that contest. With the combination of the two milestones, she joins San Jose State Hall of Famer Elinor Banks as the second member of the San José State 1,000 point/1,000 rebound club. The senior averaged 6.3 points on 48.4 percent (15-31) shooting during February, and grabbed 8.7 rebounds per game. The Spartans were a perfect 6-0 during the month. The ScholarShare College Savings Plan is California's official 529 plan.
