Burlington, Iowa. - The San José State University men's golf team starts the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa in first place with two players tied for first individually at four-under par. The Spartans have a 10-under par 278, after 18 holes on the Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
Four Spartans finished the day in the top 10 on the leaderboard. Scott Munger and William Barnett went out and shot four-under par, and both tied for first in the tournament. Munger had five birdies and one bogey. Barnett rallied for four birdies on the back nine to finish off his day.
Sophomore Kevin Velo, is tied for ninth with a one-under par 71. Velo made four birdies and 12 pars and is tied with fellow teammate Matthew Murray who shot five birdies and four bogeys.
Sean Talmadge withdrew from the first round of the tournament due to injury.
This is the Spartans' best 18 holes at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and the team's best round of the season.
