Anaheim, Calif.----- For the second consecutive year, the San Jose State University cheerleading squad finished second in the Small Coed 4-Year College Division category at the United Spirit Association's national championships held recently at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The "Small Coed" category is for teams using fewer than four males in a 2:30 choreographed performance.
"With close to 50% being first-year members on the team, this was a major rebuilding year," said head coach Kelvin Lam, whose 17-member squad performed in a qualifying round and a final performance. "This really speaks to the amazing talent and potential of this team. The future for this program is looking incredibly bright."
In the last four years, San Jose State took home a national championship trophy in 2014 and 2015 and finished second in 2016.
"It's crazy to look back on all that I've learned and how I've grown to love cheerleading more than I could have ever imagined," said freshman Dana Kudelka.
Besides Kudelka, Patrick Aguayo, Cole Haft, Ryan Hale, Jamie Ascanio, Paris Colunga, Angela Gallegos, Julia Guajardo, Lauren Hasson, Mariah Helton, Lanessa Lozano, Kierstin Mazzie, Princess Misay, Madison Montoya, Monique Nieto, Shelby Sherick, and Kelsea Steele shared in the excitement of the team's performances and accomplishment.
Boise State finished first in the Small Coed 4-Year College Division category. Arizona State, Texas State, Idaho State, Grand Canyon and CSUN (Cal State Northridge) were other NCAA Division I schools that competed in this category.
