San Jose, Calif.--- The San José State University men's golf team will begin their 2017 campaign at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge on Sunday, September 17, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Spartans will be competing in the 54-hole tournament for three days on the par 72, 7,112 yard Donald Ross Course at Cedar Rapids Country Club.
The 15-team field will include: Campbell, Eastern Michigan, Furman, Georgia, Lipscomb, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, North Carolina State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, Southern Illinois, UNC-Wilmington, Washington State.
Competing for the Spartans: Kevin Velo, Scott Munger, Sean Yu, Vijay Srinivasan, and Sean Talmadge.
In the Offseason: The Spartans added four new faces to the team: Ben Campbell, a junior who transferred from College of the Canyons. Max Meltzer a freshman out of Aptos High School. Freshman, Vijay Srinivasan from Mission San Jose High School. Sophomore, Sean Yu, a transfer from University of California.
"We got multiple new players competing for a spot in the starting lineup," said head coach John Kennaday. "I am excited about the new guys on the team."
Previously at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge: The Spartans last competed at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge on September 30 through October 1 where the team captured a season best third place. In the first round, the Spartans carded the fourth lowest round vs par in school history at 10-under par.
In round one of the tournament, four Spartans placed top 10 on the scoreboard: Scott Munger, William Barnett, Kevin Velo, Matthew Murray.
Matthew Murray tied for sixth earning the best finish of his Spartan Career. Scott Munger tied for 12th, his best finish in the 2016-17 season.
