Zeratsion Leads Spartans To Top-10 Finish At Capitol Cross Challenge

Sept. 30, 2017

Sacramento, Calif. -- Senior Huruy Zeratsion was the 13th runner overall finisher at the Capitol Cross Challenge leading the San José State men's cross country team to a ninth-place finish on Saturday morning.

"Today was a good the next step for this team," head coach Brad Wick said after the race. "We were much better than we were just three weeks ago in Fresno and we are starting to see performances which will pay off for us in our next three races."

Zeratsion, the first Spartans across the line, stopped the clock at 24:49.7, more than two minutes faster than his previous best this year at the 8k distance. The next two SJSU finishers were Charlie Pope (25:24.6 and in 41st place) and Josue Gonzalez (25:25.1 in 43rd place).

"Huruy ran really well and I thought Charlie and Collin (De Julio) showed a lot of improvement. Josue was sick all week and I was really impressed with his fortitude. Most runners would have just quit during the race or not even started, but Josue gutted it out."

The fourth Spartans across the line was De Julio. His 25:36.5 was good for 50th place and Mario Perez rounded out the scoring with an 81st place finish in 26:11.6.

Javier Ubaldo was 92nd (26:30.1) and Nicholas Liebmann finished 140th (28:11.0)

Chico State won the team competition with 70 points. The Spartans were ninth out of the 22 teams with 228 points.

Kyle Medina of Chico State was the top finisher attached to a college team. He ran a 24:12.1.

The Spartans next race, the last of the regular season, is on October 14, in Sunnyvale at the Bronco Invitational.
