Women's Water Polo Splits Matches At Cal Cup

Jan. 27, 2018

Berkeley, Calif.----- Lili Urvari scored the winning goal with 3:36 remaining in the fourth quarter giving #16-San Jose State University a 6-5 win over #22-Fresno State at the Cal Cup hosted by the University of California.

Urvari, a freshman from Hungary, took a cross-pool pass from teammate Klaudia Paradi and scored her second goal of the match for the Spartans (2-2). Her first score at 6:18 of the first quarter was San Jose State's only lead until her match-winner. The contest was tied four times and at 5-5 at the 5:47 mark of the fourth quarter on Caroline Kerwin's' first goal of the season.

San Jose State closed out the match denying two Fresno State (0-1) power --plays in the final 3:22. Overall, the Bulldogs were able to score only on 3-of-14 6-on-5 power plays.

"We came out strong (defensively). Our 5-on-6 defense was dead on against Fresno State. We really shut down their post players," said San Jose State head coach Gabor Sarusi.

Tayler Peters played the entire match in goal for the Spartans and was credited with seven saves.

"She was huge for us. She had a great game -- she blocked a 5-meter (penalty shot), She played really well. She was one of the reasons we kept Fresno to five goals."

San Jose State's victory offset a 13-6 morning loss to #7-UC Irvine. The Spartans were on the short end of an 8-0 blitz by the Anteaters that covered 12:15 from the end of the first quarter into the early portion of the third quarter.

"We had one really bad quarter, the second quarter, when we lost 5-0. Again, we couldn't convert our 6-on-5's and our opportunities," the Spartans coach said. San Jose State was only 2-of-14 on power plays in the two matches.

Jordan Milich-Misikini and Guara Garcia Delgado each scored twice for San Jose State in the UC Irvine match. Urvari added a goal and is the only player on the team to score in all four matches this season.

San Jose State concludes its weekend at the Cal Cup on January 28 with an exhibition match with host Cal at 9:45 a.m. and a non-conference contest with #1-ranked Stanford at 2:15 p.m.
