Berkeley, Calif.----- After going just 2-of-14 in power-play opportunities on the first day of the Cal Cup women's water polo tournament, San Jose State University head coach Gabor Sarusi was looking for improvement in one-player advantage situations.
The Spartans' coach got that with his team going 4-of-9 against #1-ranked Stanford, but the Cardinal was too much elsewhere a 15-4 non-conference victory on the final day of the tournament hosted by the University of California.
Jordan Milich-Misikini, in the first quarter, and Guara Garcia Delgado, in the second, scored in the first half for the 16th-ranked Spartans (2-3). Milich-Misikini's goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter drew San Jose State to 3-1, the closest the Spartans would get the remainder of the match. Garcia Delgado's goal early in the second quarter cut San Jose State's deficit to 5-2.
Freshmen Lili Urvari and Natalie Hosmer scored in the second half for the Spartans. Urvari remains the only San Jose State player to score in every match this season. Aria Fischer was the leading scorer for Stanford (4-0) in the non-conference match.
Katelynn Thompson was San Jose State's goalkeeper in the first half and was credited with five saves. Tayler Peters finished the match for the Spartans and stopped four shots.
"We played a lot of people against Stanford and that was good for future training. It's also nice for our players to get a christening against a team in our league (MPSF). This is what the MPSF is about," said the Spartans head coach.
Earlier in the day, the Spartans posted a 9-7 exhibition victory over a split squad University of California team.
"Our underclassmen stepped and really did well today. Natalie (Hosmer) scored a goal (against Stanford). Lili Urvari scored a nice goal. Jordan (Milich-Misikini) was phenomenal this weekend. Guara (Garcia Delgado) and that's good to see," Sarusi said.
San Jose State returns to action Saturday, February 3, when the Spartans play a pair of doubleheaders in the Stanford Invitational. #2 Cal is San Jose State's first opponent on February 3, at 11:00 a.m. The Spartans then take on #11-UC Davis at 5:45 p.m. On February 4, San Jose State faces #8-Michigan at 9:40 a.m. and an unnamed opponent at either at 2:00 p.m. or 3:15 p.m. #9-Pacific, #10-Long Beach State, the Chinese National Team and host Stanford round out the eight-team field.
