Newport Beach, Calif.----- San Jose State University had a 7-5 third quarter lead, but lost to Long Beach State, 9-7 in overtime in its fourth and final match of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational women's water polo tournament.
In a match filled with 35 ejections, 18 against Long Beach State and 17 against the Spartans (3-9), San Jose State continued its strong defense in the first half taking a 3-1 lead into halftime. Vanessa Elgohary, Lili Urvari and Sheila Jensen scored for the Spartans while Katelynn Thompson stopped five 49ers shots on goal in the first 16 minutes. Thompson would finish with 10 saves, her second contest this season with double-digit saves.
The match opened up offensively in the third quarter with each team scoring four times. San Jose State got power play scores from Jordan Milich-Misikini and Urvari, who led the team with three goals. Urvari's goal at 1:23 of the third quarter giving San Jose State a 7-5 lead would turn out to the Spartans' final goal of the match.
Annabel Harman's power play goal at 2:25 of the fourth quarter tied the score at 7-7.
Each team had a power-play opportunity in the final minute of regulation, but neither could capitalize.
"We had a real good chance to score. We set up a play and didn't convert it," said San Jose State University head coach Gabor Sarusi who complimented the 49ers defense on stopping Guara Garcia Delgado's match-winning attempt.
The 49ers scored both its goals in overtime on power plays, one in each of the two three-minute overtime periods.
"We stopped 13 of their 17 power plays and we only scored on 3-of-18," Sarusi explained on one of the major differences in the match. As the match wore on, San Jose State lost first--string players Jacqui Maisey and Milich Misikini to ejections. Freshman Isabella Schmidt would become a third Spartan to foul out before the end of the contest.
"We played well today, but fell a little bit short. It's promising to see the team playing well.
"We're look forward to four tough games at Harvard next weekend."
San Jose State has matches with Brown and host Harvard on Saturday, March 3, and Princeton and Wagner on Sunday, March 4, in the Harvard Invitational. The Harvard match will be televised on ESPN3 starting at 11:30 a.m. (PT)/2:30 p.m. (ET).
