Stanford, Calif.----- A disappointing weekend on the scoreboard came to a close for the San Jose State University women's water polo team with a 14-3 loss to #9-Michigan in its third match of the Stanford Invitational.
Ranked #17 nationally in the Collegiate Water Polo Association weekly poll, the Spartans (2-6) fell behind early. San Jose State's first goal came at 4:59 of the second quarter after Michigan (7-5) had a 4-0 lead. Jordan Milich-Misikini scored her first of two for the Spartans.
Michigan answered back with four more scores over the rest of the second and 6:13 of the third quarter for a commanding 8-1 advantage before Milich-Misikini scored again.
Freshman Tyanna Supreme scored the only other Spartan goal that closed out the scoring in the match.
Senior Tayler Peters was credited with 10 saves in goal for San Jose State Michigan's Heidi Ritner started in goal and made four saves. Cameron Cordial finished up and had one fourth-quarter save.
"We are improving and it's good to see the improvement from game to game. We are creating a lot of excellent opportunities (on offense). The next step for our younger players is finishing those opportunities," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi, whose team went 0-for-9 in power play chances against Michigan, but defended the Wolverines power play well allowing just one goal in five chances.
"Unfortunately, we couldn't convert on our 6-on-5. That was the difference maker (against Michigan)."
The Spartans' fourth match and second half of the doubleheader was an 11-1 loss to the Chinese national team. Sheila Jensen scored the only goal for San Jose State in the second meeting between these teams. Three weeks earlier, China beat the Spartans, 15-4.
On the first day of the Stanford Invitational, San José State lost to #2-California, 18-3, and #11-UC Davis, 12-8.
"Everybody got a lot of playing time. Our young players had a chance to shine and show what they can do against good teams," Sarusi concluded.
San Jose State is next in action at the 16-team Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by UC Irvine, February 23-25.
