Saratoga, Calif.-The San Jose State beach volleyball team won 4-1 over Portland Monday afternoon at West Valley College.
Three of the four Spartan wins came in straight sets. Nandyala Gama and Lyndi Scholl won 21-15, 21-16. Thaliana Grajeda and Jamie Hirai won 21-18, 21-14 in the fourth position, while Laura Parts and Kaitlynn Zdroik won 21-12, 21-14 in the fifth spot.
Julia Golbeck and Ciara Reistad needed three sets for their win over the Pilot team - 21-19, 12-21, 15-9. Hayley Sturgeon and Luiza Andrade fell in straight sets 21-15 and 21-17. In exhibition play, Breann Robinson and Ryann Thomison won 21-12, 21-14.
The Spartans are now 5-6 on the season and play again this weekend. The team travels to Berkeley on Saturday to face Pacific (9 a.m.) and California (12 p.m.). On Sunday, the Spartans play two matches in Monterey - Arizona at 11 a.m., and Santa Clara at 2 p.m.
