Los Angeles. Calif.----- Following the first day of the LMU Invitational women's water polo tournament, San Jose State University head coach Gabor Sarusi praised his team's fitness level as a key to a 8-7 sudden victory overtime win over host LMU.
The Spartans (8-12) needed eight periods to pull out the victory over LMU.
To open the second of two days at the LMU Invitational, #21-ranked San Jose State went into a ninth period or third 3:00 sudden victory stanza to pull out a 6-5 triumph over #23-Marist (11-13). The Spartans closed out its LMU Invitational losing to #9-Michigan, 12-8, ending a four-match winning streak.
Guara Garcia Delgado scored the match-winner for the Spartans at the 2:09 mark of the fifth overtime period and third sudden victory stanza on her eighth shot of the match -- the most by a San Jose State player in a contest this season.
Garcia Delgado and the Spartans needed a power play goal from freshman Lili Urvari on the final play of regulation as time expired to send the match into overtime tied, 5-5.
Early on, San Jose State never lost the lead. The Spartans led 2-1 at halftime and 4-2 early in the fourth quarter after a goal by Jennifer Liu. Marist charged back late with three goals in a 1:56 span for a 5-4 lead with 0:38 remaining.
The Red Foxes had four power play chances to none for San Jose State in the five extra periods before Garcia Delgado came up with the winning goal. Overall, Marist was 1-of-12 on the power play.
San Jose State goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson played the entire contest and was credited with a single-match personal high 19 saves. Marist's Jessica Hermosillo was equally as busy with 18 saves.
The Spartans' quest for a four-match sweep at the LMU Invitational and a season-long five-match winning streak ended when #9-Michigan raced to a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter before San Jose State got on track offensively and closed to 7-4 with 1:25 remaining before halftime.
The teams traded goals with the Spartans getting to within three a second time in the match, 11-8 with 5:37 to go in the final quarter.
Klaudia Paradi and Michelle Taikeff each scored twice for San Jose State against Michigan. Tayler Peters was in on nine saves.
The Spartans, who have already played 25 compared to 16 periods of water polo in four regulation matches, conclude a busy weekend of matches opening Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, vs. UCLA, Sunday, March 18, 2018. Match time at Spieker Aquatics Complex is 12:30 p.m.
