#20-Women's Water Polo Loses To #2-Cal, 13-5

March 31, 2018

Berkeley, Calif.----- San Jose State University found a way to score more goals in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo match against conference leader and #2-nationally-ranked California than UCLA and Arizona State.

However, it was the Golden Bears that were victorious, 13-5, at the Spieker Aquatics Complex on the Cal campus. The goal differential was much closer than when the two teams met earlier in the season at the Stanford Invitational when the Golden Bears posted an 18-3 win over the Spartans.

"Our intensity was there. We didn't give up," said San Jose State women's water head coach Gabor Sarusi, whose team was trailing 7-0 at halftime. "We didn;'t back down, corrected our mistakes and we kept going. That was really good to see.

"That's why were better in the second half.

Sheila Jensen was San Jose State's top goal scorer with two. Lili Urvari, Natalie Hosmer and Tyanna Supreme, three of the Spartans' nine freshmen this season, each scored once. The five goals, all in the second half, were two more than the three scored by UCLA and Arizona State in conference losses earlier in the month to Cal.

The Golden Bears capitalized on their power play opportunities going 9-for-11. San Jose State was 1-of-7 on power plays with Hosmer scoring for the Spartans.

"With Cal, you can't take everybody away (on the power play. With other teams, we can isolate three or four shooters. You just can't do that with Cal because everybody can shoot," said the Spartans' coach. Prior to the Cal match, the Spartans were successfully defending 6-on-5 power plays at a 75 percent or better clip in March.

San Jose State returns to action Friday, April 13, hosting Arizona State in a MPSF match at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., beginning at 5:00 p.m.
