Women's Water Polo Loses To #2-Stanford, 16-4, In MPSF Tournament

April 27, 2018

Berkeley, Calif.----- San Jose State University's Guara Garcia Delgado scored the first two goals of the match, but it was Stanford University coming back for a decisive 16-4 victory in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) women's water polo tournament opening round match.

Garcia Delgado scored an even-strength goal on the Spartans' (9-18) first possession of the match and one at the end of a power-play opportunity giving San Jose State a 2-0 lead over #3-seed and #2-nationally-ranked Stanford (17-2).

"We came out with a good hunger and started out well," said San Jose State women's water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi.

The Cardinal regrouped decisively wiping out the Spartans' lead by the end of the quarter with three goals, five unanswered scores in the second quarter and three more in the third for an 11-2 advantage.

"In the second and third quarters, they (Stanford) just countered (on offense). We couldn't get back in our transition defense. Stanford took advantage. They countered us many, many times," Sarusi said.

Freshman Natalie Hosmer's penalty shot goal for the Spartans at the 2:59 mark stopped the Stanford scoring barrage. San Jose State senior Jennifer Liu notched the final goal of the match on a power play as the horn sounded.

Spartan goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson was credited with nine saves including four in the first quarter keeping San Jose State's hopes alive. Stanford starting goalkeeper Julia Hermann was credited with two saves in the first half. Back-up Cardinal goalkeeper Emalia Eichelberger played the second half and stopped three Spartan shots.

The Stanford win was the second time in five days the Cardinal beat San Jose State and the third victory this season by Stanford over the Spartans.

San Jose State closes out its season Saturday, April 28, facing either Arizona State or UCLA in the fifth-place match of the MPSF women's water polo tournament.
