Sprinters Boost Spartans Up Swimming & Diving Championship Standings

Minneapolis, Minn.----- Five 50 freestyle sprinters accounted for 34.5 points helping San Jose State University move up from tenth to ninth place after the second day of the Mountain West Women's Swimming Championships conducted at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

"We had another great day of races led by impressive performances by our sprinters and one of the fastest butterfly splits in SJSU history by Lani (Auva'a)," said San Jose State women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins. There were five changes in the school's career top-10 list – three of them in the 50 free.

Freshman Madelyn Sailors turned in the fastest 50 free time for the Spartans with her 15th place clocking of 23.19. Sailors had a preliminary round time of 23.18 to qualify for the "B" consolation final and the #10-mark on the all-time San Jose State list.

Antoinette Loya was 16th at 23.21 in the evening finals. She had the ninth fastest time in the morning qualifying round with a career best 23.06. Brenna Bushey was in 18th with a 23.10, the new #9-mark on the SJSU career top-10 list.

Taylor Lehr, 23rd at 23.36, and Katie McIntee, 24th at 23.58, also scored San Jose State points in the 50 free.

The Spartans also got a 15th-place finish by Chloe Limargo in the 200 individual medley. Her 2:03.19 time moved the freshman into the #8-spot on the San Jose State top-10 list.

San Jose State's remaining points of the evening came in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Gabriela Vieira, Limargo, Violani Auva'a and Gabby Heng was sixth at 3:41.73 for the new #5-mark on the top-10 list.

The three-day meet continues on February 22 with the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle relay.

"Tomorrow (day three) is our strongest day and we are looking forward to getting after it in the morning," concluded the Spartans' head coach.
