Albuquerque, N.M.----- Savanna Perez's ninth-place finish in the 800-meter final was the best San Jose State University individual finish on the final day of the 2019 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship.
Perez was timed in 2:17.69. Avi'Tai Wilson of UNLV won the race in 2:08.05.
Perez also ran the anchor leg of the Spartans' 4x400 meter relay. With Diamond Tabron leading off, Sarahvaughn King running second and Daja Johnson passing the baton to Perez, San Jose State finished eighth out of 10 teams with a season-best time of 3:53.36, less 0.5 seconds off of the school record of 3:52.81.
Jennifer Sandoval, eighth in the 5,000 meters the previous night, came back with a 12th place finish in the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:57.35. Jeanette Zambrano was 21st with a 10:09.98 clocking.
"This weekend, we got the most out of ourselves. We left the meet with good momentum and this spring, we plan on being on the podium at the outdoor championships. We are going to get there by working harder and building upon our experiences this weekend," said Kendra Reimer Gonzales, San Jose State University's director of track and field about both the Spartan men's and women's programs.
The Spartan women finished 11th in the team standings with the two points. Colorado State won the women's team championship with 139 points.
Next, San Jose State turns its attention to the outdoor season. The first meet is the UC Davis Aggie Open, March 8 & 9.
