Arevalo, Women's Golf First After Two Rounds At The Gold Rush

Seal Beach, Calif.— Abegail Arevalo shot a five-under 67 in the second round of The Gold Rush and leads the field by three shots at seven-under 137 after two rounds at the Old Ranch Country Club. San José State holds a two-shot lead in the team standings at two-over 578.

Arevalo started the day with a two-under 70 in the first round. Starting on the fourth hole, she was one-under par through seven holes with a birdie on the par-5 #6. She then bogeyed two of her next three holes but recovered to birdie three of her next four holes to go to two under. Arevalo then made par on her final four holes of the first round.

In the second round, Arevalo shot her second 67 of the season and third of her career. During the round, she made five birdies (#2, #6, #12, #14, #17) and 13 pars. Arevalo is second at the tournament in birdies made with nine.

The Spartans found themselves in a predicament Monday morning. Maddie White had made the trip to Southern California but was sick all night and unable to participate with her teammates. Franziska Friedrich flew down to be with her team but would not land in time for the first round.

So, for the first round, all four players on the course for San José State would count towards the team score. Those four came together and shot an even-par 288 and were in first place by six shots. Arevalo and Natasha Andrea Oon each shot a two-under 70, Antonia Malate a one-over 73 and Alexandra Cooper with a three-over 75.

Friedrich joined her teammates for the second round, and, despite not playing a practice round at the course, shot a one-over 73 for the round. Oon shot a 74, Cooper a 76 and Malate a 77 to go with Arevalo's 67 as SJSU finished with a two-over 290 and a two-shot lead over Sacramento State heading into the final round Tuesday.

Oon finished the day tied for fifth at even-par 144, Malate tied for 29th at 150, and Cooper tied for 31st at 151.

"I am super proud of this team," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann. "This was a solid effort by the team, and it was great that they were able to hang in there through everything today. They didn't know what was going to happen during the day and that Franziska would join them.

"Abby had another amazing day for her, a steady performance. Natasha had a nice first round and Antonia and Alexandra were solid for us. Franziska had not practiced on this course and went out and shot a 73 for her round.

"We were reading the greens well today and made putts. We had solid ball striking and need to do more of the same in the final round."

Final round action begins Tuesday morning with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The Spartans will play with Sacramento State and Georgia off of holes 1, 2 and 3.
