New Marks On Spartans' Top Five List At Hornet Invitational

Sacramento, Calif.----- Like its opening meet of the outdoor track and field season, the combination of the distance group success and hammer thrower Silvia Gutierrez guided San José State University to a fifth-place finish in the team standings at the Hornet Invitational track and field meet.

The Spartans made a big dent on the school's all-time list in 800, 1,500 and the steeplechase. In each event, there is a new #2 time in the event.

Kai Bohannon's 10:58.26 was good enough for second place overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Teammate Camilla Hanson was third in the same race. Bohannon's time comfortably moves her into the second spot at San Jose State for the steeplechase.

Savanna Perez's 2:11.75 time in the 800 meters and Jeanette Zambrano's 4:30.65 was a lifetime best and now #2 on the Spartans' all-time list.

"Our women's distance (group) had a great meet. We had a lot of personal bests in the 800, 1500 and steeplechase. They really showed up with a purpose and competed fiercely," said Kendra Reimer-Gonzales, San Jose State University's director of track and field.

Silvia Gutierrez recorded her second top-five performance of the outdoor season placing fourth in the hammer throw. Her best mark of the day was 160-feet-10, in line with the 164-feet throw opening week at the Aggie Invitational hosted by UC Davis.

Also Eseta Finau became the first Spartan to compete in the pole vault outdoors. She cleared 11-feet-7.75 and finished in ninth place based on number of misses.

San José State competes next weekend at the Rainbow Relays, March 22 & 23, hosted by the University of Hawaii.
