Kingsville, Texas—The San José State beach volleyball team won twice on Friday, defeating Missouri Baptist, 5-0, and Texas A&M-Kingsville, 4-1, in the first day of the Emerald Beach Hotel Classic.
Julia Golbeck and Sarah Smevog improved their record to 5-0 on the season with two straight-set wins on Friday. Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik needs three sets in the first match of the day against MBU (21-11, 18-21, 16-14) but swept the Javelina pair 22-20, 21-13.
Tabea Schwarz and Caitlin Bettenay got two wins in the first position, sweeping both opponents. Ciara Reistad and Ryann Thomison also recorded two straight-set wins on Friday. Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gávio split their matches, winning 21-8 and 21-10 against Missouri Baptist, but fell in three sets to the Javelina pair, 22-20, 19-21, 15-13.
The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season and play two more matches at the Emerald Beach Hotel Classic on Saturday morning. The team faces Houston Baptist at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. PT, and ULM at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT.
