The San José State women's golf team fell in match play, 3-2, to California Monday afternoon at the Lamkin Invitational being played at The Farms in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
The Spartans were seeded second in match play after finishing second in stroke play Monday morning. The Spartans shot a 300 in stroke play to be seeded second in match play. Natasha Andrea Oon and Abegail Arevalo each shot even-par 72.
San José State then faced California in the afternoon. Franziska Friedrich won her match, 4&3, over Amina Wolf of California. Starting on the fourth hole, Friedrich went down one through the first three holes before the match went all square on #7 as Friedrich made par and Wolf had a bogey. Friedrich went two-up on #10 with a par before dropping to one-up on #12 as she made a bogey.
On #16 and #17, Friedrich made pars, while Wolf had bogeys to put Friedrich 3up. Friedrich then made a birdie on #18 to win the match 4&3.
Oon won the other Spartan point in match play, winning 1 up, over Marianne Li. The two battled back and forth through the first 13 holes (#5-18) and were all square before playing the final five holes (#1-5). Oon took the lead for good on #1 as she made a par, while Li had a bogey.
The same result happened on the next hole to put Oon up two with three holes to play. Oon finished bogey-par-par, while Li was birdie-par-bogey to leave Oon one up.
Alexandra Cooper fell 4&3 to Maria Herraez Galvez, while Maddie White lost 6&4 to Katherine Zhu. Arevalo fell 2&1 to Cindy Oh.
The Spartans face UC Irvine Tuesday morning in consolation bracket play. Pepperdine faces Texas Tech in the other consolation match.
