Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.—San José State tied UC Irvine, 2.5-2.5, in consolation play at the Lamkin Invitational held at The Farms in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans advanced to the fifth-place match to play Pepperdine after the winner was determined by the total margin of victory added up from the individual matches.
Spartans Natasha Andrea Oon and Abegail Arevalo won their respective matches, while Maddie White tied Maddie Riggs of UC Irvine. Franziska Friedrich and Alexandra Cooper lost their matches, 3&2 and 4&3, respectively.
Oon and Sienna Lyford were all square through their first four holes played (#10-13) and Oon started her match by making nine consecutive pars and was one-up through nine holes. She then made birdie-par-par-birdie-birdie to go five-up with four holes to play and win the match 5&4.
Arevalo took the lead over Sabrina Li on her first holed played (#10) and never gave up. She was four up through nine holes and went seven up after four holes on the front nine (#1-4) to win the match 7&5. She made three birdies and seven pars during her round.
After eight holes played (#11-18), White was three-up on her match with Riggs. However, her next three holes saw Riggs square up the match and actually led for three holes (#5-7). They were all square through eight and White took a lead on #9 as she made par and Riggs bogeyed the hole. On the final hole (#10), White made a bogey while Riggs made par to end the match all square.
Friedrich and Cooper never led in their matches Tuesday. Both got down early and were never able to square their matches up before losing. Cooper made 10 pars in her 15 holes played but did not card a birdie.
