Spartans Lead Strong Field At Silverado Showdown

Napa, Calif.—The San José State women's golf team shot a one-over 289 Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Silverado Showdown and leads the field by two shots. Three Spartans finished the day in the top-15.

Antonia Malate and Maddie White each shot a one-under 71 and are tied for third place. Malate shot her first under-par round in her short collegiate career, making four birdies and 11 pars. After shooting a one-over 37 over the front nine, she was two-under on the back nine with seven pars and birdies on #11 and #15.

White started her round with eight consecutive pars before back-to-back bogeys on #9 and #10. She then made three pars, a birdie and two more pars before making birdies on the final two holes.

Abegail Arevalo shot a one-over 73 and is tied for 15th place. She started the day making par on her first six holes and finished the front nine bogey-par-birdie to be even-par. Arevalo made two bogeys and four pars on holes 10-15, before finishing the round birdie-bogey-birdie.

Natasha Andrea Oon is tied for 24th at two-over 74. She had a rough start to the day, shooting a four-over 40 over the first nine holes. Oon recovered over her final nine holes, making birdies on #10, #11 and #14 to go with five pars and a bogey.

Franziska Friedrich rounded out the Spartan scoring with a four-over 76 and tied for 44th. She made six pars and three bogeys and was three-over par for her first nine holes. Friedrich made two birdies, three bogeys and four pars over the final nine holes.

San José State has a two-shot lead over UCLA and Southern California. The field features 11 teams in the Golfstat top-50, the top-10 teams in the standings are separated by just 12 strokes.  The Spartans lead the field in birdies made with 16, including 12 over the back nine.

"We preach finishing each round strong, and we did that today," said Spartan head coach Dana Dormann. "I am really happy for Antonia shooting her first under-par round as a Spartan. She really scrambled out there and saved a lot of great pars.

"Our wedge play was really good today, a direct correlation to our hard working pay off from practice at the Spartan Golf Complex. Hopefully we can continue to capitalize on this."

The Spartans begin the second round on Monday with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m. The team will play with UCLA and Southern California.
