Colorado Springs, Colo.— Forty-eight San José State University student-athletes have received a 2018-19 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award for their performance in the classroom during their athletic career.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have completed two semesters at the institution, have a 3.5 or better grade point average and have participated in a competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.
The Spartan student-athletes represent 14 sports, led by women's swimming and diving with 10 honorees and followed by football, women's soccer and softball with five honorees each.
Swimmer Megan Au is the only Spartan this year to earn four Mountain West Scholar Athlete recognitions.
"Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate academic excellence and have made us proud once again. The academic rigor of the Silicon Valley's public institution sets our student-athletes apart from their peers. We are proud of the academic achievements of our Spartans and this past academic year's Mountain West Scholar Athletes," said Eileen Daley, senior associate athletics director for academics and student services.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes that earned the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award this year. They are wonderful representatives of our athletics program," said San José State University Athletics Director Marie Tuite. "I look forward to presenting them with their Mountain West Scholar-Athlete medallion this fall."
The Spartan Scholar-Athletes helped the Mountain West to a new league-record 867 student-athletes recognized.
