Three Spartans Finish In Top-20 At MW Championship

Rancho Mirage, Calif.—Three Spartans finished in the top-20 as the San José State women's golf team finished fourth at the 2019 Mountain West Championship Wednesday played on the par 72 Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club.
 
Natasha Andrea Oon finished in a tie for second place at three-over 219. She shot a one-over 73 in the final round, making two birdies and 13 pars on the day. After starting her round with two bogeys, she made eight consecutive pars and a birdie to get back to one-over par. Arevalo then went bogey-par-birdie and three pars to finish the round.
 
Abegail Arevalo finished in eighth place at 10-over 226, shooting a 76 in the final round. She led the field in pars made at the championship with 39. After shooting four-over par for the first nine holes, Arevalo made nine consecutive pars to end the tournament.
 
Franziska Friedrich shot her best round of the championship with a 75 on Wednesday to finish tied for 17th at 17-over 233. After a bogey on her first hole, she responded on the par-five, 482-yard #2 with an eagle to go to one-under par. She stayed there until the sixth hole where she made bogey on three of the next four holes to go to two-over par for the first nine holes. Friedrich then made six pars, a birdie and two bogeys over her final nine holes.
 
Antonia Malate tied for 29th at 22-over 238, while Maddie White tied for 37th at 27-over 243.
 
The Spartans shot 305 in the third round to finish at 912 and in fourth place. San Diego State won the championship at 904, one shot better than Nevada who had the low round of the day at 297. UNLV finished third at 911, followed by San José State. SJSU made just four birdies and an eagle in the final round after making 11 birdies in the first round.
 
San José State now awaits word on selection to the NCAA Regionals. The selection show will air live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, April 24 from 2:30-4 p.m. PT. Regionals are May 6-8 at four sites, followed by the national championship May 17-22 at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
