Spartans and Aggies Tie In Friday Dual Meet

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State women's swimming and diving made their second appearance of the 2019-20 season in front of their home crowd as the Spartans faced off against UC Davis at the Student Recreation and Aquatic Center (SRAC) on Friday afternoon. The meet resulted in a tie at 150-150.

"This was a great performance for our team today," head coach Sage Hopkins said. "UC Davis is a program that has just destroyed us the last two years, and for us to come in and race as hard as we did today and come out with a tied score is really a testament to the great attitude that this team had going into this meet. It's an amazing thing to be back in our home facility and be able to defend our home turf. We came out with a tie, but that's not a loss, so we'll take that. I would have loved to have gotten a half more point somewhere, but I couldn't be more proud of our team. It was a great day."

The Spartans took both relays and had six individual winners in the meet. The day started with the SJSU "A" relay of Maddy Grimes, Rebecca Petoe, Antoinette Loya and Madison Sailors winning the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:39.00 for a quick 11 team points.

Gabby Heng swam the 200 yard freestyle in 1:53.52 to finish first and pick up nine more points and then the Spartans took the top four spots in the 100 yard backstroke with Lani Auva'a (57.31) leading the pack.

The duo of Petoe and Chloe Limargo then took first and second, respectively, in the 100 yard breaststroke, as did Sailors and Loya in the 50 yard freestyle.

Coming out of the halfway mark, Heng and Loya took first and second in the 100 yard freestyle with times of 51.70 and 52.08, respectively, and then Grimes took second in the 200 yard backstroke. Limargo won the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:22.94 and Erin Wayman took second in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:09.87. Kate Hanf closed out the individual swims with a great second-place finish in the 400 yard individual medley with a final of 4:33.95.

The Spartans then picked up 13 more critical points in the 200 yard freestyle relay as the "A" squad of Heng, Sailors, Loya and Katie McIntee took first in 1:34.80 and the "B" squad of Petoe, Kimberlee Giggey, Gabby Vieira and Daria Cocol finishing third in 1:37.83.

On the platform, Natasha Sondeno finished fifth in the 1-meter with a score of 231.90  and then took second in the 3-meter with 261.88. Anna Jabs finished eighth in both with scores of 186.98 and 181.58, respectively.

The Spartans return to the home pool one last time for 2020 as they host Cal State East Bay next Friday for senior day.

"Senior day is a huge day for the program," Hopkins said. "It's an emotional day for the entire team, especially the seniors and the coaches who have been with these incredible women for four years, five years in Giggey's case. We're looking forward to having a great meet and excited to have a lot of fans, a lot of Spartans out to support us."
