Colorado Springs, Colo.— A record-number 100 San José State University student-athletes from 10 Spartan spring sports teams earned 2020 Academic All-Mountain West honors.
The baseball team led the sports with the most award winners with 24 student-athletes. Three other teams had double-digit athletes honored – women's swimming and diving with 20, men's track and field at 15 and softball at 11.
Thirteen (13) San José State student-athletes earned Academic All-MW honors for each of their four years at the school – Cassidy Clark (SB), Tamara Culibrk (WTN), Makayla Englestad (SB), Fieme'a Hafoka (WBB), Kate Hanf (WSWIM), Gabby Heng (WSWIM), Antoinette Loya (WSWIM), Jacqueline Nisson (WSWIM), Jennifer Sandoval (WT&F), Maleah Schmidt (WSWIM), Natasha Sondeno (WSWIM), Erin Wayman (WSWIM) and Jeanette Zambrano (WT&F).
They join five student-athletes from the fall who received four recognitions –Thaliana Grajeda (volleyball), Carlie James (women's soccer), Josh Love (football), Jose Piña (men's cross country), and Jennifer Sandoval (women's cross country).
"In the most challenging learning environment our student-athletes faced in their lives, to come through with 100 San Jose State University student-athletes earning this conference award is remarkable. When virtual learning became the norm for the remainder of the spring semester, our student-athletes and our academic support staff pivoted quickly, and the result is the most Mountain West academic award winners we've ever had in one semester. For the 2019-20 academic year, 190 Spartans earned academic all-conference recognition from the Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation or the Golden Coast Conference.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better on a 4.00 scale, be enrolled at the conference institution at least one year and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
In all, a league-record 1,130 student-athletes have been named to the spring 2020 Academic All-MW teams. Sports recognized include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
